How Oklahoma Vehicle Excise Tax Is Calculated

New car: excise = price × 3.25% Used car: excise = $20 + (price − $1,500) × 3.25%

Oklahoma’s main car tax is the vehicle excise tax, collected by your tag agent when you title the car. There’s no city or county add-on. The price must be within 20% of the car’s average retail value in the state’s guides. If it isn’t, Service Oklahoma sets a taxable value within that range.

Does a trade-in lower the excise tax?

Not anymore. HB 1183, effective July 1, 2026, says the taxable value is the actual sales price before any discounts or credits for a trade-in. A $40,000 car with a $10,000 trade-in is taxed on $40,000. Next door, Kansas lets a trade-in lower the tax.

Are dealer fees taxed?

Doc fees, financing, insurance and maintenance agreements aren’t part of the excise base.

What about the 1.25% sales tax?

Since July 1, 2017, Oklahoma has also charged a 1.25% sales tax on vehicle purchases. Bills to repeal it have been filed, and one passed in 2022 but was vetoed. It still applies in 2026.

Oklahoma excise tax trade-in change from July 2026: a $40,000 car with a $10,000 trade-in is now taxed on $40,000, or $325 more

The excise tax is due within 30 days of getting the car. After that, a daily penalty applies, up to the amount of the tax. Late registration costs $1 a day, up to $100.

Oklahoma’s excise is collected when you title the car here. If you’re comparing a purchase across the border, note that Texas charges 6.25% sales tax and Missouri bases tax on your home address. Cars titled out of state need a $4 VIN inspection before Oklahoma titles them.

How to Use an Oklahoma Vehicle Tax, Title and License Calculator by Hand

  • Add the tag fee for the car’s age.
  • Add $11 title, $17 transfer and $1.50 insurance fee.
  • Add $110 for an EV or $82 for a plug-in hybrid (up to 6,000 lbs).

What This Estimate Includes

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Subtracting a trade-in. It no longer lowers the excise since July 1, 2026.

  • Writing a low price. It has to be within 20% of average retail value.
  • Missing the 30-day deadline. Penalties start after that.
