About TaxTitleAndLicenseCalculator.com
TaxTitleAndLicenseCalculator.com helps people in the United States work out what a vehicle really costs to buy and register: the sales or use tax, the title fee, and the registration and plate (tag) fees. We turn each state’s own rules into plain-language guides and a free calculator, so you can estimate your total before you ever walk into a dealership or a DMV.
We are an independent information service. We are not a government agency, a DMV, a state department of revenue, or a car dealer, and we are not affiliated with any of them. We do not collect taxes, issue titles, or register vehicles. Everything on this site is an estimate and an explanation to help you plan.
Why this site exists
Vehicle tax rules are confusing because every state does it differently. One state charges a percentage, another a flat fee by vehicle age, another a one-time charge instead of sales tax. Local taxes, trade-in rules and rebate rules change the number again. Most “calculators” online copy each other, use the wrong rate, or quietly go out of date.
We built this site to do the opposite: research each state from its own official sources, show our work, date everything, and fix it when the law changes.

What you will find here
- A free tax, title and license calculator covering all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
- A plain-language guide for each state, written for ordinary buyers, not tax lawyers.
- National guides on how vehicle tax works, how much to budget, and how dealer fees differ from government charges.
- A public log of rate and fee changes, with effective dates.
Who runs the site
The site is edited by William Smith, who leads its research and writing. William has spent years tracking U.S. vehicle taxation, DMV fee schedules and state revenue rules, and reviews every state page before it is published or updated.
His focus is simple: make sure each figure on the site can be traced back to an official state source, and that the writing explains the “why” in language a first-time buyer can follow. You can read more about how we work on our Methodology and Editorial Policy pages.
How we stay independent
Our estimates are built only from official rules, never from what a dealer or advertiser would prefer. If the site ever earns money from ads or partner links, that will never change a tax rate, a fee, or a recommendation. We explain this in our Editorial Policy.
