Wyoming Vehicle Sales Tax Calculator

Wyoming charges 4% state sales tax plus a county tax of up to 2%, so most buyers pay between 4% and 6%. You pay it to your county treasurer, not the dealer. Each year, you also pay a county fee based on the vehicle’s original price. It starts at 60% of that price and shrinks every year.

Use this Wyoming vehicle sales tax calculator to estimate the tax, title and registration on a new or used vehicle. Below, you’ll find the rules for trade-ins, rebates, private sales and family transfers, plus three worked examples.

Checked against the Wyoming Department of Revenue, WYDOT, county treasurer offices and Wyoming Statutes on October 22, 2026. This is an independent estimate. Your county treasurer sets the final amount.

How Wyoming Vehicle Sales Tax Is Calculated

Sales tax = (price + doc fee − trade-in − rebate assigned to the dealer) × (4% + county rate)

Wyoming’s state rate is 4%. Your county adds up to 2% more. The Department of Revenue publishes charts for 4%, 5%, 5.25%, 5.5% and 6% totals. The rate that applies is the one for the county where you live, not where you bought the vehicle.

Who collects the tax?

Your county treasurer collects vehicle sales tax before the first registration. Dealers don’t collect it, except on motorcycles. That surprises buyers who expect it on the dealer invoice. Bring the invoice or a bill of sale to the treasurer’s office.

You have 65 days from the purchase date. After that, the penalty is 10% of the tax (minimum $25), plus 1% interest for each month.

What counts as the price?

The total sales price includes costs the dealer had before the sale, such as a documentation fee. It leaves out costs after the sale, like title and license fees and extended warranties. So a dealer’s doc fee is taxed, but the title fee isn’t.

Does a trade-in lower the tax in Wyoming?

Yes. Your trade-in value comes off the price when the trade and purchase happen as one transaction. The title of the vehicle you trade must already be in your name. A leased car works only if you bought it out first and paid tax on the buyout.

Do rebates lower the tax in Wyoming?

Only a manufacturer rebate assigned to the dealer at the time of sale comes off the price. A rebate check mailed to you later doesn’t. Ask the dealer how the rebate is written on the contract.

Wyoming’s County Registration Fee: Based on the Factory Price

Every year, the county treasurer charges a county fee that works like a property tax on the vehicle. It uses the vehicle’s factory price, which is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) when new, plus any special equipment. It isn’t what you paid. A used car with a $40,000 sticker price is figured on $40,000.

County fee = factory price × year-of-service rate × 3%

Year of serviceRateFee on a $40,000 factory price
1st year60%$720
2nd year50%$600
3rd year40%$480
4th year30%$360
5th year20%$240
6th year and later15%$180

The minimum county fee is $5. The money stays in your county and goes to schools, the city and other local governments. The statute sets the same formula in every county, but you register in the county where you live.

Other states charge by vehicle age too. Idaho charges registration by vehicle age, Utah charges an age-based fee from $10 to $150 and Nebraska charges a yearly motor vehicle tax based on price and age. Wyoming’s version is the one tied most closely to the sticker price.

In Wyoming, the county clerk handles titles and lien filings. The county treasurer handles registration, plates and sales tax. Both offices are in your county seat. You can also buy a 30, 60 or 90-day temporary registration at some treasurer offices, but the sales tax must be paid first and you need proof of insurance.

Wyoming Electric Vehicle and Plug-In Hybrid Fees

On July 1, 2026, Wyoming lowered its yearly electric vehicle fee from $200 to $100. It also began charging plug-in hybrids $50 a year. Both are added to your registration. Regular hybrids and gas vehicles pay nothing extra.

VehicleYearly feeNotes
All-electric$100Was $200 before July 1, 2026
Plug-in hybrid$50New on July 1, 2026

Many websites still show the $200 amount. Wyoming’s fee is now lower than Idaho’s, since Idaho adds $140 a year for electric cars.

What a New Car Really Costs at Registration in Wyoming

In Wyoming, the county fee can top the state fee many times over in the first year. The graphic below shows Example 1 line by line.

Private Sales, Family Transfers and Out-of-State Purchases

Do I pay tax on a private car sale in Wyoming?

Yes. You pay sales tax to your county treasurer before you register the vehicle. Bring a dealer invoice, purchase order or notarized bill of sale that lists the date, make, VIN and price. A trade-in doesn’t apply to a private purchase unless it is part of the same transaction.

Is there a family exemption in Wyoming?

Yes, starting July 1, 2026. A purchase from, or gift to, an immediate family member is exempt. That means a parent, child, spouse, sibling, stepparent, stepchild, stepsibling, grandparent or grandchild.

There is one catch. The seller or giver must already have paid sales or use tax on the vehicle. Bring the paid receipt or the earlier registration. Without proof, the treasurer taxes the fair market value. File Form 110 for the exemption.

What if I buy a car in another state?

You owe Wyoming use tax at your county’s rate. Wyoming credits sales tax you legally paid to another state, up to the amount Wyoming would charge. If you paid less, you pay the difference. Compare that with Mississippi, which gives no credit for tax paid to another state.

Military and nonresident buyers

A nonresident who buys a vehicle and takes it out of Wyoming within 30 days can claim an exemption by signing a declaration. Active-duty military who live outside Wyoming aren’t exempt from Wyoming vehicle sales or use tax.

How to Calculate Wyoming Tax, Title and License Costs by Hand

  • Start with the price and add the dealer’s documentation fee.
  • Subtract your trade-in (title in your name, same transaction).
  • Subtract a manufacturer rebate only if it was assigned to the dealer at the sale.
  • Multiply by 4% plus your county rate (4% to 6% total). Subtract any sales tax you paid to another state.
  • Find the vehicle’s factory price and its year of service. Multiply: factory price × rate (60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20% or 15%) × 3%.
  • Add the $30 state registration fee.
  • Add $15 for the title and $20 if you have a loan.
  • Add $100 for an electric vehicle or $50 for a plug-in hybrid.

Your county treasurer’s office can confirm the final amount, and several Wyoming counties post their own fee calculators.

What This Estimate Includes

  • State and county sales tax with trade-in, rebate and doc-fee rules
  • County registration fee on the factory price
  • $30 state fee, $15 title and $20 lien fee
  • Electric and plug-in hybrid fees
  • Family exemption and out-of-state credit

What This Estimate Does Not Include

  • Late penalties and interest
  • Personalized, specialty or embossed plate fees
  • Temporary registration costs
  • Insurance, loan interest and optional products
  • Fees for trucks above 6,000 lbs, which are set by weight

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Looking for the tax on the dealer invoice. The county treasurer collects it.
  • Using the state rate alone. Add your county rate for a total of 4% to 6%.
  • Missing the county fee. It’s charged every year and starts at 60% of the factory price.
  • Using the price you paid for the county fee. It uses the factory price.
  • Using the old $200 EV fee. It was lowered to $100 on July 1, 2026.
  • Forgetting the 65-day deadline. Late tax adds a penalty and interest.
  • Assuming a family transfer is exempt without proof. The seller must have paid tax.
  • Trading in a vehicle that isn’t titled in your name.
