Oregon Tax, Title and License Calculator

Oregon has no sales tax, and that includes cars. You'll still pay a title fee and a two-year registration fee that depend on the car's gas mileage. Some new cars also carry a 0.5% vehicle privilege tax. If you live in the Portland area, there's a county fee on top.

Use this Oregon tax, title and license calculator to estimate your costs. Below you'll find how each charge works, a note on the 2026 fee vote and three worked examples.

Checked against the Oregon DMV, the Oregon Department of Revenue and the Oregon Department of Justice on October 22, 2026. This is an independent estimate. The DMV sets your final amount.

Is There Sales Tax on Cars in Oregon?

No. Oregon doesn't charge sales tax on new or used vehicles, and no city or county adds one. Buyers coming from Idaho, which charges a 6% sales tax, often notice the difference at the closing table.

What is the Oregon vehicle privilege tax?

It's a tax on dealers for the privilege of selling vehicles. The rate is 0.5% of the retail sales price. Dealers may pass it on to you, and then it's itemized on your paperwork. A vehicle is taxable only if all of these are true:

  • It was bought from a dealer.
  • It has never been registered or titled in Oregon (except as a dealer demo).
  • It has 7,500 miles or fewer, or it was sold with a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin.
  • Its gross vehicle weight rating is 26,000 pounds or less.

A used car from a private seller isn't taxed. A used car with more than 7,500 miles from a dealer isn't taxed either.

Privilege tax = (price + accessories + freight − separately stated discounts or rebates) × 0.5%

Trade-ins and down payments don't lower the amount. Dealer document fees, extended warranties, gap insurance and registration fees aren't counted.

Why does my dealer paperwork show other "taxes"?

Dealers pay a few business taxes, including the privilege tax and the Corporate Activity Tax. Some pass them on to buyers. The Oregon Department of Justice says these shouldn't be listed as government taxes on your purchase paperwork. You can ask the dealer to explain any line.

Oregon has no sales tax on cars, but dealers owe a 0.5% vehicle privilege tax on some new vehicles, which they may pass on to the buyer

Oregon Title Fees

The title fee depends on gas mileage. It applies to a new title, a title transfer and a replacement title. Oregon has no separate charge for duplicates.

Combined MPGTitle fee
0 to 19 MPG$101
20 to 39 MPG$106
40 MPG or higher$116
All-electric$192

Apply within 30 days of the sale. A late title transfer costs an extra $25 between 31 and 60 days and $50 after 60 days. A VIN inspection done in Oregon costs $9.

Did Oregon's 2025 fee increases take effect?

Mostly no. A 2025 law (House Bill 3991) raised the gas tax and the title and registration fees. Voters rejected most of those increases in Measure 120 on May 19, 2026. ODOT says one piece stayed: a $30 increase in the registration surcharge for 40+ MPG cars, which is already in the $216 above.

Oregon DMV title fees in 2026 by fuel economy: $101 for 0 to 19 MPG, $106 for 20 to 39 MPG, $116 for 40+ MPG and $192 for all-electric vehicles

Oregon Registration Fees

Regular passenger registration is valid for two years. A new car sold with a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin gets a four-year registration. You pay double the registration fee and double any county fee. Title and plate fees stay the same.

Combined MPGTwo yearsFour years (new car)
0 to 19 MPG$126$252
20 to 39 MPG$136$272
40 MPG or higher$216$432
All-electric$376$752

The DMV lists the 40+ MPG and electric amounts for vehicles not enrolled in OReGO, the state's pay-by-the-mile program. If you need new plates, add $26. Moving plates to another vehicle costs $30. A replacement plate costs $12 more.

Oregon passenger vehicle registration fees in 2026: two-year amounts of $126 to $376 by MPG and doubled four-year amounts for new cars

Oregon County Registration Fees

Three counties add their own fee. It depends on where you live or where the vehicle is kept.

CountyOne yearTwo yearsFour years
Multnomah (Portland)$56$112$224
Washington (Hillsboro, Beaverton)$30$60$120
Clackamas (Oregon City)$30$60$120

Counties use the money for roads and bridges. Connecticut taxes a car's value again every year, while Oregon's county fee is a flat amount.

Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Fees

All-electric vehicles pay a higher title ($192) and two-year registration ($376) than gas cars. The DMV says new rules are coming. Starting July 1, 2027, used electric vehicles must pay an $86 two-year registration fee and either a flat fee or a pay-by-the-mile charge.

That change reaches new electric vehicles on January 1, 2028 and hybrids and plug-in hybrids on July 1, 2028. Until then, hybrids pay the fee for their MPG tier.

Private Sales, Out-of-State Purchases and Newcomers

Do private sales pay tax in Oregon?

No. You pay the title and registration fees. Both you and the seller must complete the title transfer, and you have 30 days to apply.

What if I buy a car out of state?

Oregon has no sales tax, so there's nothing to pay for a private purchase. A dealer purchase can owe vehicle use tax of 0.5% if the vehicle meets the same rules above. Pay it within 30 days if the dealer didn't collect it. Shoppers in Nevada, Arizona or Utah should keep the bill of sale.

What if I move to Oregon?

You don't pay sales tax. You title and register the vehicle, and the DMV may require a VIN inspection ($9). Fees follow the same MPG schedule.

Are gifts or family transfers taxed?

There's no sales tax to avoid. A family transfer still needs a title, so the title and registration fees apply.

How to Calculate Oregon Tax, Title and License Costs by Hand

  • Find your car's combined MPG at fueleconomy.gov.
  • Pick the title fee for that MPG tier: $101, $106, $116 or $192 for an EV.
  • Pick the two-year registration fee: $126, $136, $216 or $376 for an EV.
  • If the car is new with a certificate of origin, double the registration fee.
  • Add the county fee if you live in Multnomah ($112), Washington ($60) or Clackamas ($60). Double it for four years.
  • Add $26 for new plates.
  • If a dealer sold you a new or low-mileage vehicle, add 0.5% of the price after separately stated discounts. Ignore trade-ins.

What This Estimate Includes

  • 0.5% vehicle privilege tax on eligible dealer sales

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Looking for a sales tax. There isn't one.
  • Counting a trade-in against the privilege tax. It doesn't reduce it.
  • Expecting the 2025 fee increases. Voters rejected most of them in May 2026.
  • Using the two-year registration on a new car. New cars get four years and pay double.
  • Forgetting the county fee. It applies in the Portland area.
  • Picking the wrong MPG tier. Check the rating on fueleconomy.gov.
  • Missing the 30-day title window. Late fees are $25 and then $50.
