How Nevada Vehicle Sales Tax Is Calculated

Sales tax = (price + doc fee − trade-in) × your county rate

Nevada's base rate is 6.85%. Counties add their own rates, so the total depends on where you live. Clark County's total is 8.375%. That is the Las Vegas area, so most buyers pay near that.

A dealer collects the tax at delivery. Nevada residents buying out of state can't get a drive-away permit.

Does a trade-in lower the tax in Nevada?

Yes. The tax is figured on the net selling price after your trade-in. It works for any trade-in, even one bought in another state. If you trade down to a cheaper car, the credit can't be more than the tax on the new price.

Do rebates lower the tax in Nevada?

A dealer discount lowers the price, so it lowers the tax. A manufacturer rebate doesn't. The Department of Taxation says rebates "do not affect the sales tax on the selling price." Tennessee also taxes the full price before a manufacturer rebate.

Are dealer fees taxed in Nevada?

Document fees and smog fees sold with the vehicle are taxable. Title fees aren't. If you pay a dealer a doc fee of $500, you pay tax on it too.

Nevada's Governmental Services Tax: The Yearly Cost

The governmental services tax (GST) is Nevada's version of a vehicle property tax. You pay it at registration and again every year. It goes to local governments. It's based on the vehicle's original MSRP, which never changes, and gets smaller as the vehicle ages.

GST = MSRP × 35% × depreciation % × 4%

  • Start with the original MSRP.
  • Multiply by 35%. That is the DMV valuation.
  • Reduce the valuation by 5% in the first year, then by 10% more each year. It stops at 15% of the valuation.
  • Multiply the result by 4%. The minimum GST is $16.

Supplemental GST is a second voter-approved tax for highways. It applies only in Clark and Churchill counties and is 1 cent per $1 of the same depreciated valuation. On the $30,000 example, that adds $99.75 in year one.

Nevada's approach differs from other states. Utah charges a yearly age-based fee by model year. Nevada's tax starts from the sticker price and steps down.

License plate fees and a VIN registration fee also apply, but the DMV page lists no amounts. Check the DMV's fee estimate. The DMV says there is no grace period for late renewals.

What a New Car Really Costs at Registration in Nevada

In Nevada, the sales tax is the largest piece, but the GST adds hundreds in the first year. The graphic below shows Example 1 line by line.

Private Sales, Gifts, Out-of-State Purchases and the Military

Do I pay sales tax on a private sale in Nevada?

No. The Nevada DMV says sales taxes are not charged on private party vehicle sales, family sales or gifts. You still pay the GST, registration and title fees. Arizona doesn't tax private-party sales either, so Nevada isn't alone in this.

What if I buy a car in another state?

If the other state's tax was higher than Nevada's, you owe no more. If Nevada's is higher, the DMV bills the difference when you register. Compare that with Mississippi, which gives no credit for tax paid to another state. Nevada buyers who live in two states are taxed in Nevada.

What happens to out-of-state sales by Nevada dealers?

A Nevada dealer can sell tax-free to a nonresident only if the buyer removes the vehicle within 15 days, with proof such as an out-of-state license, insurance and a notarized affidavit.

What can military members avoid?

Active-duty service members can waive the GST with an affidavit, but it doesn't exempt the sales tax. National Guard members don't qualify. County assessors can also give GST relief to some veterans, disabled veterans and the blind.

Nevada car purchase tax rules: no sales tax on private, family or gift transfers, credit for tax paid in another state and active-duty military GST waiver

Electric Vehicles in Nevada

Nevada doesn't charge an annual electric vehicle fee. EV owners pay the same registration and GST as other drivers, and the GST is based on the MSRP, so a high-priced EV pays more. Other states charge extra, such as Idaho at $140 a year for electric cars.

How to Calculate Nevada Tax, Title and License Costs by Hand

  • If you buy from a dealer, start with the price and add the doc fee.
  • Subtract your trade-in and any dealer discount. Don't subtract a manufacturer rebate.
  • Multiply by your county rate (6.85% base, 8.375% in Clark County). Skip this step for a private sale.
  • Find the original MSRP. Multiply by 35%, then by the depreciation percentage for the vehicle's year (95% in year one).
  • Multiply that value by 4% for the GST. Use $16 if the result is less.
  • In Clark or Churchill County, add 1% of the same value.
  • Add $33 for registration and $28.25 for the title.

What This Estimate Includes

  • Dealer sales tax with trade-in, rebate and doc-fee rules
  • Governmental services tax and supplemental GST
  • $33 registration and $28.25 title
  • Private, family and gift rules

What This Estimate Does Not Include

  • License plate and VIN registration fees
  • Emissions test fees
  • Late fees and penalties
  • Insurance, loan interest and optional products
  • Special plates

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Charging sales tax on a private sale. Nevada doesn't.
  • Forgetting the GST. It is due every year and can run into hundreds.
  • Using the purchase price for GST. It uses the original MSRP.
  • Skipping the Clark and Churchill supplemental GST.
  • Subtracting a manufacturer rebate. Only dealer discounts count.
  • Missing the doc fee. It is taxable.
  • Assuming military buyers skip sales tax. Only GST can be waived.
  • Registering late. There is no grace period.
