Delaware Tax, Title and License Calculator

Delaware has no sales tax. Instead, you pay a document fee of 5.25% when you title a vehicle. The fee uses the purchase price or the NADA book value, whichever is greater. The minimum is $8. A title costs $35, or $55 with a loan, and registration is $40 a year.

Use this Delaware tax, title and license calculator to estimate your total. Below you'll find the trade-in credit rules, the gift list, the new hybrid and electric fees, and three worked examples.

Checked against the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Delaware Administrative Code on October 22, 2026. This is an independent estimate. The DMV sets your final amount.

How the Delaware Document Fee Works

Document fee = (purchase price − trade-in credit) × 5.25%

The document fee is a one-time charge for titling a vehicle in Delaware. It replaced the old 4.25% rate on October 1, 2025. Many websites still show the old number.

Delaware isn't a sales tax state, but the fee works like one. Neighbors differ: Maryland charges a 6.5% excise tax at titling, so the same car can cost more across the line.

Is the document fee the same as sales tax?

No. It's a titling fee set by the DMV. Dealers collect it and send it in with your title paperwork. It is not charged again when you renew. The DMV lists it with title fees, not with taxes.

What if the price is lower than book value?

The DMV compares your price with the NADA average trade-in value. If a private bill of sale is lower than that value, the fee is figured on the NADA number. You can bring a written appraisal from a Delaware licensed dealer instead.

Trade-In Credit in Delaware

A trade-in lowers the price used for the fee, but with limits. The credit is only for a vehicle that is titled in Delaware. It also can't be bigger than the document fee you actually paid on that trade-in car. The DMV allows one vehicle per application.

RuleWhat it means
Delaware-titled vehicleAn out-of-state trade-in usually doesn't qualify. Two proof-based exceptions exist in the regulation.
Cap at fee paidThe credit can't exceed the document fee paid when the trade-in car was titled.
Name matchThe trade-in's title must carry the name of at least one buyer on the new title.
Sold privatelySell your old car within 60 days before or after the new title and apply on form MV347.

Say you traded a car and the fee on it was $510 when you bought it. Your credit is capped at $510, even if the new rate on the trade-in value would be $525.

Delaware trade-in credit rules: vehicle must be Delaware-titled, credit capped at the document fee paid on the trade-in, 60-day window for private sales

Private Sales in Delaware

You pay the same 5.25% on a private purchase. You must show a bill of sale or an affidavit. Without one, the DMV uses the NADA average trade-in value.

If your bill of sale price is under the NADA value, the NADA number is used. A bill of sale showing no money and the same person signing as buyer and seller can avoid the fee.

Gifts and Family Transfers in Delaware

No document fee applies to a gift from an immediate family member. The list is wide: spouse, parent, child, sibling and grandparent. It includes step-relatives and in-laws. The exemption only covers a vehicle with a Delaware title.

A gift that doesn't qualify is taxed on the current NADA average trade-in value. You may bring a dealer appraisal instead. Other no-fee cases include inheritance from a descendant, a name change after marriage, and joint-owner transfers after 30 days of joint ownership.

Buying from an estate is different. The DMV says purchases from an estate pay the fee.

New Residents, Out-of-State Purchases and Military

What if I buy a car in another state?

Delaware gives a credit for sales tax, transfer tax or a similar charge you paid to another state. The vehicle must have been titled or registered there within 90 days before you register it in Delaware. The DMV enforces this rule strictly.

Delaware residents who buy from an out-of-state dealer get no credit. You could be taxed twice. States such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia may collect their own charge on the sale.

What if I move to Delaware with my car?

If you paid no sales tax or similar charge in the last 90 days, the fee uses the NADA average trade-in value. If you already paid the Delaware fee on the same car, were registered elsewhere, and come back, you don't pay again.

Is there a military exemption?

Yes. Active, reserve and National Guard members stationed in Delaware, and their dependents, don't pay the fee. Your car must be registered in your home state or at a past duty station. Bring orders within 90 days of arrival or purchase.

Delaware 90-day rule for out-of-state vehicle purchases: credit for tax paid elsewhere, no credit for residents buying from out-of-state dealers, military exemption

How to Calculate Delaware Tax, Title and License Costs by Hand

  • Start with the purchase price. For a private sale, compare it with the NADA average trade-in value and use the higher number.
  • Subtract your trade-in credit. It must be a Delaware-titled vehicle and can't exceed the fee paid on it.
  • Multiply by 5.25%. The minimum is $8.
  • Add $35 for the title, or $55 if you have a loan.
  • Add $40 for registration.
  • Add the hybrid, plug-in or electric fee if it applies.

What This Estimate Includes

  • 5.25% document fee with the NADA rule
  • Title with or without a lien
  • Registration
  • Hybrid, plug-in and electric fees
  • Trade-in credit and gift rules

What This Estimate Does Not Include

  • Vanity or specialty plate fees

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Calling it a sales tax. Delaware has none. The charge is a document fee.
  • Using the old 4.25% rate. It rose to 5.25% on October 1, 2025.
  • Forgetting the NADA rule on a low private-sale price.
  • Expecting a full trade-in credit. It's capped at the fee paid on the trade-in.
  • Trading in an out-of-state car and expecting credit.
  • Buying out of state as a Delaware resident. You get no credit for tax paid there.
  • Missing the hybrid or EV fee at renewal.
